Yerrecuy Habitat Bank

Tadó y Cértegui - Chocó | 1,337.65 Hectares

The Habitat Bank Alto Río San Juan “Yerrecuy” is located on the eastern side of the Chocó department, between the municipalities of Tadó (in the Yerrecuy and Ibordó districts) and Cértegui (in the Paredes district). The Habitat Bank covers a total area of 1,337.65 hectares and is situated 3.2 km from the Playa de Oro corregimiento in the municipality of Tadó.

The area of the Habitat Bank consists of a single plot of land, granted as a collective title to the ethnic-territorial organization Consejo Comunitario Mayor del Alto San Juan (ASOCASAN). This title was awarded by INCORA through resolution 27-27 in December 2001.

This conservation project is the first Habitat Bank registered by an Afro community, clearly recognizing the need to protect the biodiversity of the Chocó biogeographic region within its territorial management strategies.

HISTORY

Yerrecuy Habitat Bank

The Alto Río San Juan “Yerrecuy” Habitat Bank is in the process of registration with the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development (MADS).

This application is driven by the local community's strong commitment to aligning their economic activities with the sustainable use of the territory. ASOCASAN is dedicated to demonstrating that the Alto Río San Juan “Yerrecuy” Habitat Bank will yield measurable benefits for the preservation and restoration of the ecosystem—benefits that would not be achievable without its implementation.

The project will manage 1,337.65 hectares designated for the preservation and restoration of fragmented forests with secondary vegetation and areas degraded by artisanal mining activities within the Very Humid Tropical Forest ecosystem, which has high restoration potential. Additionally, it will contribute to climate change management in the territory, where vulnerability is heightened due to a lack of resources to address this issue.
