San Pedro Habitat Bank

Vereda San Pedro, Sabanalarga, Casanare | 255 Hectares

Located at the foothills of the Eastern Cordillera, towards the Colombian Orinoquía, is the Habitat Bank Piedemonte Llanero del Casanare "Mesa de San Pedro."

This space is established in the municipality of Sabanalarga, in the San Pedro district, to the west of the Casanare department, and is dedicated to the preservation and restoration of nature. It aims to protect over 255 hectares that encompass ecosystems of wet piedmont forest and floodplain gallery forest.

Thanks to the initiatives of the landowners, the Habitat Bank has undergone reforestation processes to increase forest cover and promote natural succession, contributing to the protection of water resources and biodiversity in the area.

HISTORY

San Pedro Habitat Bank

The nomination of the Habitat Bank Piedemonte Llanero of Casanare “Mesa de San Pedro” is largely attributed to the presence of significant areas of forest cover and semi-natural habitats characteristic of the Colombian Orinoquía. This includes the Helobioma Piedemonte Orinoquía, Zonobioma Húmedo Tropical Casanare, Zonobioma Húmedo Tropical Piedemonte Orinoquía, and Helobioma Casanare biomes.

These natural and semi-natural covers are currently in a conserved state, showcasing considerable extent and high potential for expansion and increased structural connectivity in the area. However, agricultural, livestock, and forestry activities in the region, particularly on neighboring properties, impose pressures and threats that need to be controlled, avoided, and mitigated.
