Biodiversity Credits for the Maintenance of Ecological Infrastructure

Challenges and Opportunities Leading Up to PPP Americas 2025

Terrasos participated in PPP Americas 2025, the leading forum on public-private partnerships in Latin America and the Caribbean, organized by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). This event, held in Lima, Peru, from April 8 to 10, served as a key platform to discuss innovation, structuring, and financing sustainable, resilient, and development-focused projects.

During the event, Terrasos took part in strategic discussions, highlighting the urgency of strengthening financing models for biodiversity and emphasizing the need to incorporate the maintenance of ecological infrastructure into regional development planning.

One of the most significant moments was the panel on Sustainable Amazonia, where innovative financial models for the conservation and development of this strategic region were discussed.

The Amazon: A Global Asset, A Regional Priority

The Amazon is the largest tropical rainforest on the planet, spanning over 7 million square kilometers and hosting approximately 10% of the world's biodiversity. This ecosystem plays a crucial role in regulating the global climate by acting as a carbon sink and generating rainfall that influences both regional and global weather patterns.

However, the Amazon is facing increasing pressure from human activities such as intensive agriculture, livestock farming, illegal mining, and infrastructure expansion. These activities have led to significant forest cover loss, with over 23 million hectares deforested in the last five years.

Deforestation not only impacts biodiversity and climate balance but also has direct repercussions on energy infrastructure. A study by Climate Policy Initiative highlights that deforestation in the Amazon Basin has significantly reduced the energy generation capacity of major Brazilian hydroelectric plants, such as Itaipú and Belo Monte.

Furthermore, the degradation of the Amazon ecosystem increases vulnerability to extreme weather events such as droughts and wildfires, which in turn release large amounts of stored carbon, exacerbating climate change.

Tebu: A Concrete Path to Finance the Amazon

In light of this situation, it is imperative to implement innovative financial mechanisms that promote the conservation and restoration of the Amazon. Instruments like biodiversity credits can mobilize investments into projects that protect this vital ecosystem, ensuring its ecological integrity and the services it provides both regionally and globally.

In this context, Tebu, the biodiversity unit developed by Terrasos, was presented as an innovative tool that translates the ecological value of ecosystems into real, verifiable financial flows aligned with international frameworks.

"The Amazon is one of the planet's largest environmental assets. If we want to conserve it, we need tools that can mobilize private capital with integrity, transparency, and measurable results", said Vanessa García, International Business Developer.

Terrasos emphasized that commitments made in forums such as COP16 and the upcoming COP29 must translate into nature-based financing solutions. The use of rigorous standards, traceability, and active participation of local communities are key conditions to build trust in the biodiversity market.

Next Steps: Solutions with a COP30 Vision

Terrasos reaffirms its commitment to mobilizing investments toward high-impact solutions, building regional partnerships that recognize biodiversity as a strategic asset for the present and future of Latin America.

On the path to COP30, we will continue working toward a vibrant, protected, and financially supported Amazon with integrity.
