📘 What is the PDF Metric?
PDF stands for Potentially Disappeared Fraction of species. It estimates the fraction of species likely to disappear in a square meter of land over one year due to human activities like land use, emissions, or water extraction.
PDF·m²·year is a scientific metric widely used in life cycle assessment (LCA) and biodiversity research.
A higher PDF value means a higher potential biodiversity loss.
Examples of activities that increase PDF:
- • Deforesting tropical forests
- • Converting natural land into agriculture or urban areas
- • Excessive water extraction in sensitive ecosystems
- • Emissions that contribute to climate-driven habitat loss
🔄 From PDF to Tebu
A Tebu is a Terrasos Biodiversity Unit that represents a verified positive biodiversity outcome, through preservation and restoration activities.
1 Tebu = 10 m² of biodiversity gains over 30 years = 300 PDF·m²·year.
This means if your footprint is 3,000 PDF·m²·year, you'd need 10 Tebu to fully compensate that impact.
